A campaign committed to encouraging a bee-friendly environment

NANAIMO, BC – This spring, Leadership Vancouver Island (LVI) group More Cow Bell will be working with the Nanaimo Beekeepers to inform and educate residents of Nanaimo on the importance of our pollinating friends – the bees – through a series of appearances throughout the community. The emphasis will be on creating a bee-friendly environment by issuing simple recommendations that everyone can follow without having to start their own colony or hive (though it’s not discouraged!). Nanaimo-ites will be able to find us at local seasonal markets and a strong presence at the Bright Futures event where we can inform many of the families that will be attending that event.

Approximately $250 million of BC’s agricultural production is dependent on pollination. Along with a concerning decline in the bee population, it’s critical that everyone is aware of their own dependence on bees and what individuals and families can do to inhibit this decline. The Nanaimo Beekeepers have been looking for a way to publicize and popularize what they do and the importance of their cause. Peter Lange, Beekeeper president, expressed collaboration with an LVI group to be a very exciting opportunity that can facilitate the kind of publicity they may not have had the time or opportunity to do on their own.
