Team Collaboration

November/17/21

Our goal was to promote access to local literacy societies and resources in communities where those resources are currently limited or non-existent due to transportation, mobility, or technology related challenges. We would do this by facilitating the construction and installation of four community libraries in remote areas of Vancouver Island in partnership with Literacy Now Cowichan Executive Director, Jessica Lewinski with support from Vancouver Island Regional Library (Jason Cuffler and Natasha Bartlett), Rotary Clubs of Vancouver Island,School District 68, Rona and other community partners.

4 Free Little Libraries were constructed in remote areas of Vancouver Island

Each Library includes:

  1. An assortment of books including kids books, one library is entirely for kids
  2. Promotional items and resource information for local literacy organizations
  3. Community Log
  4. Exterior branding promoting local literacy and sponsoring organizations

Each Library is also:

  1. An approved charter of the Little Free Library Organization (www.littlefreelibrary.org)
  2. Maintained by a Community Steward with overwhelming Community Support
  3. Reporting steady traffic and content turnover

More Good News:

  1. The project came in under budget thanks to generous donations of time and materials
  2. Crucial connections were made to help support these and future Libraries
