Community Project – Team CIMBY

March/28/19

Join us in celebrating Cowichan’s diversity at the Alexander Community Event – “Community in my Backyard”!

Sponsored through the Leadership Vancouver Island (LVI) Program, Team Community In My Backyard (CIMBY) will be assisting Social Planning Cowichan (SPC) with delivery of a community safety program. Team member Cheryl Olsen Jones expressed that, “the idea is to take the stigma out of ‘NIMBY’ (not in my backyard) to think ‘CIMBY’ community in my backyard.”

On April 16th, SPC will host two safety audit walks in the Alexander neighborhood of Duncan BC. The demographics of who is invited on these two walks are indigenous and non- indigenous youth as well as local community members and Warmland residents. These demographics will give SPC and LVI insight into their concerns and experiences in this part of town. Team CIMBY will join these walks to observe and take notes, which will then be shared at a dialogue meeting in early May. SPC’s purpose in hosting safety audit walks is to help implement programming that could help alleviate some of the safety concerns. A few years ago, there was a safety audit walk conducted for youth and in 1996 there was one completed for women in Cowichan.

We invite you to the Alexander Community Event on Thursday May 23rd to hear the results of these walks, listen to live music, and eat free food.  There will also be helpful local resources to share, and the unveiling of local murals, all to highlight people working towards positive change and of course to meet your neighbors!
